There are thirty-eight (38) different private health funds registered under the Private Health Insurance Act 2007. These insurers are able to register themselves as one of two types of funds, those that are ‘open’ and those that are ‘restricted’.

Open memberships are those that are available for application from the general public. Health Insurers are able to offer member-only policies to certain individuals. These funds are known as a restricted membership organisations and can be restricted to specific professional associations, unions or employment types. In addition, there are some health insurance companies that offer corporate policies or operate in one state or nationally.
